귀신이 고칼로리?

When I was young my father said to me:
"Knowledge is Power....Francis Bacon"
내가 어릴 때 아버지는 말씀하셨지.
"아는 것이 힘이다. 프랜시스 베이컨"
I understood it as "Knowledge is power, France is Bacon".
난 이걸 "아는 것이 힘이다. 프랑스는 베이컨."이라고 알아먹은거야.
For more than a decade I wondered over the meaning of the second part and what was the surreal linkage between the two?
10여년이 지나도 난 두번째 부분의 의미가 뭔지 의아했지. 대체 그 두부분이 뭔상관이 있는거야?
If I said the quote to someone, "Knowledge is power, France is Bacon" they nodded knowingly.
내가 저걸 누군가에게 "아는 것은 힘이다. 프랑스는 베이컨"이라고 하면 알겠단듯 끄덕끄덕 했지.
Or someone might say, "Knowledge is power" and I'd finish the quote "France is Bacon" and they wouldn't look at me like I'd said something very odd but thoughtfully agree.
아니면 누가"아는 것이 힘이다."라고 말해서 내가"프랑스는 베이컨"이라고 문구를 완성시키면 내말이 뭔가 이상하다고 쳐다볼게 아니라 사려깊게 동의하더라고.
I did ask a teacher what did "Knowledge is power, France is bacon" mean and got a full 10 minute explanation of the Knowledge is power bit but nothing on "France is bacon".
난 선생님한테"아는 것이 힘이다. 프랑스는 베이컨"이 뭔 의민지 물었는데 10분 내내 아는 것이 힘이다에대해 설명듣고 프랑스는 베이컨에 대해선 암것도 없었어.
When I prompted further explanation by saying "France is Bacon?" in a questioning tone I just got a "yes".
내가 "프랑스는 베이컨?"이라고 묻는 투로 더 물으면 내가 듣는 답은 걍"맞아"뿐이었어.
at 12 I didn't have the confidence to press it further. I just accepted it as something I'd never understand.
12살이었던 난 더 따질 결심이 안섰지. 걍 내가 도저히 못알아 먹는 뭔가보다 하고 말았지.
It wasn't until years later I saw it written down that the penny dropped.
몇년 뒤에 이게 글로 써진걸 보기까진 말야
