After he put together a strong performance in the Warriors’ victory over the Rockets on Wednesday, there has been a renewed interest in the Warriors’ ability to retain DeMarcus Cousins after this season. The biggest obstacle to that happening continues to be the Collective Bargaining Agreement’s limitations on raises for recent signings through Bird rights. While this was not a problem for retaining Kevin Durant since he started his Warriors tenure in 2016 on a max contract, Cousins joined the team through the much more modest taxpayer mid-level exception, which makes re-signing him much more challenging.

This July, the Warriors will only have non-Bird rights on Cousins. Those allow a team to give a player up to a 20-percent raise in starting salary for a contract that can run from one to four seasons. Since Cousins is making $5,337,000 this season, the most the Warriors could sign him for using non-Bird rights would be $6,404,400.

There are two other paths that general manager Bob Myers could pursue to retain Cousins in 2019: cap space or a different exception. As I laid out in depth previously, the Warriors would need massive defections to open up enough space to offer Cousins a significant amount more money than they can pay him otherwise. Furthermore, that hypothetical scenario would create massive holes on the perimeter that would take precedence over a center, even a talented one.

RealGM’s current estimate puts the taxpayer MLE at $5.7 million next season, less than Cousins could make with non-Bird rights. However, there may be a way for them to pay Cousins more if Durant chooses to leave over the summer without the Warriors taking on salary via sign-and-trade. The non-taxpayer mid-level exception will be worth approximately $9.2 million, but using it triggers the hard cap, meaning the team could not go over roughly $138.8 million in total salary for the 2019-20 league year, which includes unlikely bonuses, roster holds and everything else. That would be possible even after retaining Klay Thompson but would give the team very little wiggle room and would leave the Warriors without a replacement for Durant, so it would be an impractical use of their limited flexibility. Should Myers choose to use the non-taxpayer MLE on Cousins in this hypothetical, the contract could run from one to four seasons.

After two seasons, a team has Early Bird rights on a player that function as a middle ground before Full Bird rights kick in. The franchise can offer a more substantial 75-percent raise of the player’s prior salary or pay the player five percent above the league’s average salary the year before, whichever is larger.

Since the 75-percent raise for Cousins produces a higher salary in this case, if Cousins signs that non-Bird deal worth $6.4 million in 2019, the most the Warriors could pay him using Early Bird rights in July 2020 would be $11,207,700 on a contract that could — again — run from one to four seasons. The Warriors could offer eight-percent raises per season on an Early Bird contract, but that should not make a significant difference since the low salary would likely inspire Cousins to want another shorter-term contract.

One potential difference in 2020 is a clearer path to cap space, depending on what happens the summer before. If Thompson returns and Durant leaves, the Warriors could have some spending power, but it would require the departure of Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston. Even with all of three of those key veterans gone, if Thompson gets his max this summer, the Warriors would only be looking at $25-30 million in cap space, so any retentions likely make that $11.2 million Early Bird figure the highest the team can offer. As was the case in 2019, the necessary defections to clear cap space would presumably make adding starting-caliber players at other positions a more immediate priority than retaining Cousins.

2020년 큰 차이를 가져올 수 있는 부분은 여름에 어떤 일이 벌어지느냐에 따른 캡스페이스의 변동이다. 탐슨이 재계약하고 듀란트가 떠난다면, 워리어스는 그럭저럭 지불 능력을 확보할 수 있다. 하지만 이는 드레이먼드 그린, 안드레 이궈달라, 션 리빙스턴가 떠나야 함을 의미한다. 또한 세 배테랑 선수가 모두 떠난다고 해도, 이번 여름 탐슨의 계약이 맥스라면, 워리어스는 단지 25-30밀의 캡 스페이스만 예상할 수 있다. 따라서 한 선수라도 남는다면 결국은 11.2밀의 얼리 버드 금액이 팀이 팀이 제공할 수 있는 최대 금액이 된다. 2019년의 경우와 마찬가지로 캡 스페이스를 확보하기 위한 방출은 다른 급한 포지션에 주전급 선수를 확보하기 위해 아마 사용될 것이다.

If Cousins stays with the Warriors for another two seasons, they will have Full Bird rights on him and thus finally have the ability to pay him any salary from his minimum to his maximum for one to five years. As of now, the only guaranteed contract on the Warriors’ books that far out is the $45.8 million final season of Stephen Curry’s Designated Veteran max deal. Presumably, they will add more salaries between now and then, but Full Bird rights means the Warriors can go over the cap and tax to retain Cousins, if desired.

Even beyond the huge sacrifice — based on his talent — that Cousins would have to make to take $6.4 million and $11.2 million for the next two seasons, remember that the big man turns 29 this summer as well. That means he has a limited window to maximize his financial future and while he can look healthier a year from now, age-related regression and a lack of positional scarcity are real concerns moving forward.

가진 재능에 비해서 앞으로 두 시즌 동안 6.4밀과 11.2밀을 받는 일은 굉장한 희생이라는 점 뿐만 아니라, 하나 더 기억해야 할 것은 이 빅맨이 이번 여름 29세가 된다는 것이다. 따라서 금전적인 이득을 최대화할 수 있는 시절이 길지 않으며, 1년 후 더 건강한 모습을 보여줄 수도 있지만, 노화에 따른 기량 하락, 그리고 갈수록 센터 포지션 요구가 줄어든다는 사실은 앞으로 장애물이 될 것이다.

Cousins has the right to prioritize whatever he wants as a free agent and could love being a Warrior so much that he leaves money on the table to return, but doing so two more times feels incredibly unlikely even if technically possible. From the Warriors’ perspective, using another mechanism to pay Boogie more than the non-Bird and Early Bird salaries over the next two years would necessitate a significant sacrifice on the court, as even the non-taxpayer MLE provides more value finding a forward replacement for Durant. It was always the case that the Cousins/Warriors marriage was not going to last, as the CBA deliberately makes it difficult to continue because otherwise it would be a huge loophole for elite teams and/or big markets to add top talent.

커즌스는 FA로서 본인이 원하는 것을 우선시 할 수 있는 권리가 있고, 지금 받아야 할 돈을 나중에 미룰 만큼 워리어스를 사랑할 수도 있다. 하지만 그런 일을 앞으로 두 시즌이나 계속 한다는 건 사실상 어려운 일이다. 워리어스 입장에서 논버드나 얼리버드 이외에 다른 방법으로 부기와 계약한다면 코트에서 커다란 희생을 치러야 하며, 풀 MLE 도 듀란트를 대체할 포워드를 찾는 일에 우선 순위에서 밀린다. CBA 룰이 있는 한 커즌스와 워리어스의 동행은 유지되기 어려울 것이다. 그 룰 자체가 엘리트 팀이나 빅마켓이 높은 재능의 선수를 구하는 방법을 막기 위한 것이기 때문이다.
