In Monday’s loss at San Antonio, as the Warriors offense sputtered and victory crept towards the Spurs, you wanted more Kevin Durant isolations. You wanted him to take over, bail out the ice-cold Splash Brothers and keep this streak they’re on going. Truth is, he should have.

That’s why Monday’s defeat was a pretty accurate microcosm of what seems off about the Warriors this season. The common, easy, Dubs fan-approved explanation is too much iso for KD. That reason is exaggerated.

That’s a mere 6.5 percent of Warriors possessions that are used on Durant going 1-on-1, up from 4 percent in 2016-17.

Two seasons later, the offense doesn’t flow like that anymore, not for weeks at a time like it once did, not with the harmony that once defined their union. Now the Warriors can make scoring feel like getting popcorn from between your teeth. And as a result, this season, for every 100 possessions they average just 114.8 points.

Wait. See, that’s what’s wrong with advanced analytics. Let’s look at the simple numbers. In 2016-17, when they were a salve for basketball souls, they averaged 115.9 points per game. This season? This season, man, they are way down to … 117.7 points per game?

Those aren’t incredible dips, but they do explain a bit of what we’re seeing. The potency is there. The production is there. The rate of success, though, is slightly off.

The Warriors have 31 games already this campaign in which they’ve scored 120 points or more, with 13 games left to play. In 2016-17, they totaled 32 all season. They also have 13 games with 105 points or fewer, which matches their total output from Durant’s first season.

The problem with the Warriors boils down to this: they need to be even more dominant than they were in 2016-17 and so far they’ve been just about the same.

They’ve needed to be even better for two reasons. The main one: their defense isn’t as good. The pace, the fluidity, the aggressiveness, the energy, it begins with the Warriors getting stops. Indeed, it gets them in transition more, where they are more deadly. But there is something else. The collective confidence they get from defense, the blood they smell when they get stops, does something to them on offense. It was visible in Houston and Oklahoma City last week. Their defense fed their mojo.

The Warriors’ defensive rating is currently 14th in the NBA. In Durant’s first season, they finished second in that category behind only San Antonio.

The other reason the Warriors need to be better on offense: the rest of the league is better. What used to blow away the league is now par for the course among the league’s best teams.

This season, they still lead the league in assists (29.1 per). But every other team is up, too. The Kings now rank 10th at 25.6.

The Warriors are no longer revolutionaries doing what no one has seen.

But they aren’t turning it up a notch at what they do best. That’s not because Durant is doing too many isos. Perhaps it’s more accurate to say they all are not doing a lot of the things the way they did before.

As for Durant, his cuts to the basket are down. So are his possessions coming off of screens. In Durant’s first season with the Warriors, he took 65 shots after seven or more dribbles for the entire season. This season, he’s already up to 236 attempts in that scenario. But 75 of those came when Stephen Curry was out with an injury. Durant’s 2.9 attempts in that situation per game with Curry inthe lineup is well above Durant’s 2016-17 average but still second behind Curry’s 3.4 shots after seven or more dribbles.

But there is more. Curry’s pick-and-rolls are down and so is his 3-point shooting. Klay Thompson’s taking more mid-range jumpers than he’s ever taken. Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala have passed on more shots than ever.

On their potential assists, a stat the NBA keeps that tracks assists that would have been had the ensuing shot been made, the Warriors are about 1,000 shy of what they had in Durant’s first season with the Warriors.

For whatever reason, when Durant is not playing, the Warriors do all the little things that make them look like the Warriors, which is why they are 26-4 since the start of the 2016-17 season when Curry is playing and Durant is out. Perhaps the luxury of having Durant, and the dominance they’ve built over the years, has given them a safety blanket that has robbed them of a bit of their mojo. They don’t always play as smart, focus as intently, cut as hard or screen as sternly when they have the luxury of Durant.

It seemed as if they didn’t stand around as much, didn’t take as many bad shots and appeared intent on getting everybody involved.

Plenty reasons to point to as to why they don’t look like that team more often. The blame is shared by all of them.
Or maybe it’s us. Maybe the expectations we have are too ridiculous. Maybe the algorithm through which we view and assess the Warriors mistakenly excludes the improvements by the rest of the league. Maybe holding steady is good and no one is to blame.
