PHILADELPHIA — Let’s start with a list. It’s the regular-season defensive rating of the past 10 NBA champions, along with where that number ranked in the league at the time.

The exact rating, spread over time, can be a bit noisy. It’s era-dependent. In 2004, seven defenses had a rating under 100. This season, zero defenses are below 104. Offenses have become too good, 3-pointers too prevalent, rules tilted too much in their favor.

So it’s the ranking that tells the clearer story. Against the same players, facing the same rules, in relation to the rest of the league, how well did they defend? The future NBA champ, almost always, is somewhere in the top 10 when the regular season ends.

You’d have to extend that list all the way back to the 2000-01 season — when the Lakers, with a 103.5 rating, finished way down at 22nd — to find the last future champion to fall out of the top 10.

As you can see above, that 16-season trend stopped last April. The Warriors, battling boredom and injuries, defended terribly in the final month and stumbled from eighth-ranked at the start of March down to 11th by the end of the regular season. Steve Kerr knew the history. He was admittedly worried entering the playoffs.

Which brings us to this season and the extreme lack of concern for where things currently stand. After getting swept in Florida by the Magic and Heat this week and heading into Saturday’s game in Philadelphia, the Warriors have a defensive rating of 109.3. That’s 16th in the league, behind current non-playoff teams like the Pistons, Lakers and Mavericks.

The Warriors’ offense remains so absurdly efficient — a 115.6 rating, you know, just the best in NBA history — that they’re equipped to win shootouts through June, if necessary. Also: When Andre Iguodala is on the court, they have a 103.1 defense rating. When Draymond Green is on the court, it’s 105.7. Those two, both with a history of turning it up when needed, will play more when the games matter more.

But there are still other ingredients to consider. There are still elements, different from a season ago, that could alter the result.

Without saying it, Green was mostly referring to the center spot. When the Warriors burst onto the title scene, Green was paired in the frontcourt with Andrew Bogut, a wily, communicative big who groomed Green. Green once said he “wouldn’t be half the defender” he is today without Bogut.

The Warriors’ center spot is now filled with youth and one extreme mountain of skill. But the Warriors have experienced a steep defensive downgrade. Bogut in 2015 and Pachulia in 2017 (even if neither could survive in 2019) were net defensive positives.

We’ll see. But there are typically two defensive factors that tip Kerr off to whether his team cares on a given night — are the Warriors picking up in transition and are they boxing out?

The Heat grabbed 21 offensive rebounds in one game against them recently, which included a 19-3 first-quarter rebounding advantage, leading directly to an early 19-point lead. Here are two rebound whiffs, from Green and then Cousins.

There has been some moaning — all around the league, but definitely in the Warriors’ camp — about the new, stricter defensive rules this season. Defenders are getting chirped for softer fouls, leading to more tentative play, which has resulted in outrageous point totals and terrible defensive ratings.
