Certainly the game has witnessed some of the best arrays of skills on the offensive end-- Michael Jordan's patented turnaround fadeaway, Shaq's postup and babyhook, Tim Hardaway's killer crossover and etc-- but as the game evolved, it brought forth a new generation that started to imitiate or sometimes even emulate those signature moves. Kobe Bryant excelled at MJ's postup fadeaway; Tim Duncan in his prime had the same level of finesse down on the block as Shaq did.

I truly thought that Sky Hook was the weapon that belonged solely to Kareem since nobody even tried mimicing its intricate mechanism that nearly seemed to defy the laws of physics. Kareem had the luxury of shooting a sky hook with both hands from all angles, which made him a matchup nightmare and perhaps the best low post player in history. No wonder he won 6 championship and dominated the league for 20 years.

I no longer harbor the same notion.

This baby-faced skinny dude, who came out of nowhere really, routinely humiliates the defender, manipulating all kind of fancy dribble moves--behind-the-backs, up-and-unders, between-the-legs, you name it-- regardless of how good or bad the defense is, abruptly pulls up from 30 feet(!!!) within literally a blink of an eye and scores 3 points. Next thing you know, nothing but net each time, and he walks off like a champ passing the confounded faces left on the court, when the game is on the line at that! Never have I ever seen anything this ridiculous in my life. All of his shots are impossible to contest, let alone block, since it is triggered off the dribble within 0.2 second, rendering the defender on a bare belated realization that something just happened. He draws double and triple-team all the way beyond the three point arc, something that the game has never witnessed before and nobody has even contemplated witnessing.

3 of Kareem's sky hooks can only score the same points as this dude's 2 holy-cow-shots.

50 sky hooks will merely score one more point than just 33 of those HCS.

I hereby tell you that this dude's insane pull up threes are the most ridiculous, deadly, out-of-this-world, insane-to-a-degree-of-insult set of skill in the game of basketball.
He is seriously destroying the NBA right now.

나는 1991년부터 NBA를 보기 시작했고 (그래, 너네들 대부분이 태어나기도 전.. ---제 페북 친구들이 제 학생들이 많아서요) NBA의 열혈 팬이자 지난 10년간 칼럼니스트이기도 했지. 내가 얼마나 NBA를 사랑하고 얼마나 많은 글을 썼는지는 신도 아신다구.

만일 NBA를 수놓은 수많은 공격 기술들 중 가장 치명적이고 위력적인 기술을 하나만 뽑으라면, 난 카림 압둘자바의 스카이 훅을 꼽을거야.

물론 NBA는 수많은 공격 기술들을 목격해왔지. 마이클 조던의 전매특허 턴어라운드 페이더웨이, 샤킬 오닐의 포스트업 베이비훅, 그리고 팀 하더웨이의 킬러 크로스오버 등등---- 하지만 경기가 진화하면서 이 기술들을 모방하거나 상당히 비슷하게 구사하는 새 세대들이 양산되었지. 코비 브라이언트는 조던의 포스트업 페이더웨이를 꽤 잘 흉내냈어. 전성기 팀 던컨도 오닐만큼이나 위력적인 포스트업 무브를 보여주었고 말이야.

난 정말이지 스카이 훅이야말로 오로지 카림만 할 수 있는, 그리고 남들은 흉내조차 내지 못한 기술이라고 생각했어. 거의 뭐 물리법칙을 거스르는 것처럼 보이는 그 기술말이야. 카림은 양손으로 그 어느 각도에서나 훅샷을 날릴 수 있었고 이때문에 매치업 악몽이었고 아마도 역대 최고의 로포스트 플레이어였어. 이 카림이 20년동안 리그를 지배하면서 6번의 챔피언십을 가져간건 놀랄만한 일도 아니지.

하지만 난 이제 생각이 바뀌었어.

이 애기같은 얼굴을 한 깡마른 놈이, 갑자기 어디선가 혜성처럼 나타나서는, 비하인드 백 드리블, 업앤 언더, 비트윈더 렉 같은 온갖 갖가지 휘황찬란하고 요란한 드리블을 마구 남발하며 수비수를 늘상 기만하고서는 대뜸 림이랑 30피트 거리(뜨악) 에서 말 그대로 눈 깜짝할 새에 풀업을 날려버려. 그리고 무슨 일이 일어나냐고? 림도 안맞고 들어간다니까, 그리고 나서는 의기양양해서는 벙쪄있는 선수들을 지나 유유히 걸어 돌아가. 그것도 클러치 타임때!! 난 내 인생 통틀어 이렇게 어처구니없는건 본적조차 없어. 이 개똥슛들은 블락은 고사하고 컨테스트조차 불가능한게, 그냥 0.2초만에 슛이 터지고 수비수에게는 그때서야 '응? 무슨 일이 일어났지?" 하고 뒤늦게서야 깨닫는다니까? 이놈은 삼점라인 밖까지 더블팀 트리플팀을 유도하게 만들어. 이런건 지금까지 본적도 없거니와 그 누구도 보리라고 상상조차 못했던 것들이야글쎄.

카림이 스카이훅을 3번 쏴야 간신히 이놈의 개똥슛 2번 넣은 점수랑 같아.

카림이 스카이훅을 50번 던져봤자 이 개똥슛 33번 집어넣은것보다 고작 1점 많다니까?

내 지금 말하지. 이놈의 이 개똥슛은 내가 지금까지 본 모든 기술중 제일 어이없고, 치명적이고, 4차원적이고, 너무 미친 슛이라 거의 모욕에 가까운 역대 최고의 공격스킬이야.

진심 이놈이 현재 NBA를 파괴하고 있다고.
