[First Take] 로케츠 CEO가 챨스 바클리를 비꼬다

During last night’s telecast Charles Barkley had some strong words on the state of the franchise right now take a listen.

어젯밤 방송 중에 챨스 바클리가 현재 로케츠 구단에 대해 강하게 비판하는 말을 했는데요. 한번 들어 보시죠.

Barkley : There’s nothing worse than a face hustle. I guarantee you that Rockets are going to loose this game. They came out full of energy because they’ve been embarrassed, and everybody was killing them on TV. But I’m guaranteeing you that the Rockets are going to loose this game, and they probably going to loose this game by 10 points.

바클리 : 세상에 ‘가짜 허슬’보다 더 나쁜거는 없다고 봐. 내가 장담하건데 로케츠는 이번 경기에서 질거야. 티비에서 사람들이 얘내들 열심히 털어대고 망신당하고 하니까 어제 경기에서 혼신의 힘을 다해서 싸웠는데, 이번에는 로케츠가 장담하건데 패할거야. 아마도 10점 차이로 지겠지.

Rockets CEO Tad Brown responded to Barkley on Twitter saying this:

Charles Barkley would know. His entire Rockets career was fake hustle.

이에 관련해서 테드 브라운 사장이 트위터에 이런 말을 남겼습니다.

“그거에 관해서 바클리 만큼 잘 아는 사람이 없을거야. 왜냐면 챨스가 휴스턴에서 뛴 컬리어 자체가 ‘가짜 허슬’ 이었거든.”

Allow me to say this upfront, for the record, as you know, Charles Barkley has been extreme in his criticism publicly of me for many many years on national talk shows, chat shows, and late night shows. And I have always been fine with that though I must admit those close to me have not all that fine with it. But because of that I wanted to just declare this upfront. Maybe I’m not totally objective. I will admit when I saw Tad Brown’s tweet, I laughed out loud because it was funny to me even though it was extreme in its criticism of Charles. I will get to that in a moment. I had two reactions to this.

시작 전에 이것 부터 확실히 말해 놓는게 좋겠어. 챨스 바클리는 티부이 쇼, 토크쇼 등에서 꾀 긴 시간동안 공개적으로 나를 심하게 비난해왔어. 하지만 그것에 대해서 난 아무렇지도 않았어. 내 주변 사람들은 아니었지만. 그렇기 때문에 내가 바클리에 대해서 완전히 객관적으로 생각 할 수 없다는 걸 미리 공개적으로 말해놓는거야. 인정할게. 테드 브라운의 트윗을 보자마자 박장대소를 했어. 이게 분명 바클리에게 지나치게 공격적이었지만 웃기긴 웃겼어. 이에 대해서 2가지 생각이 드는데.

My first reaction is why did these team executives continue to have twitter accounts? Because routinely, especially in playoffs situations, they get overemotional and overly protective of their team and they lash out with emotional tweet that they immediately regret this one got deleted. So again as a team executive Tad Brown, you are not speaking for you. You are speaking for and representing an entire organization, and your thoughts are going to be viewed as their thoughts. So you just can’t do it. I think every organization should shut down all Twitter accounts of any executives associated with the organization. That’s number one.

첫째는 팀 이사들이 왜 계속 트위터를 하냐는 거야. 왜냐면 특히나 플옵기간동안 이사들이 자기 팀에 관련해서 심하게 예민하고 감정적으로 반응하게 되는데, 이걸 싸질러놓고 바로 후회하고 삭제되는 일이 번번히 일어나기 때문이지. 그러니까 한 팀의 이사로써, 이번 경우에는 테드 브라운 사장이겠지, (트윗을 올렸을 때는) 자신의 생각만 표현한게 아니야. 그 글을 올렸을 때는 자신이 일하는 단체를 대표해서 의견을 표출한게 되는거지. 그러니까 그냥 하지마. 내 생각에 모든 단체들은 그들의 이사진 모두 트위터에서 탈퇴시켜야 한다고 봐. 자, 그게 첫번째였고.

Now back to the Tweet, there is some truth, but only some truth to what Tad Brown tweeted about Charles’ four years late in his career with the Houston Rockets. You remember this. Charles came to town with much hoopla which built huge expectations in Houston. That was a veritable dream team built around the Dream Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Mario Elie and we can to on and on. It looked like a loaded team, but it was an old team. And it did have one big first hoorah that first year when it made it to the conference finals and lost in six games to Malone and Stockton in Utah. As Charles wound down his career at ages 34, 35, and 36 in his last three years in Houston, I don’t believe his heart was always in it as his body started to betray him. In the end, it really betrayed him. Remember what happened to him? He tore his quad tendon that last year and missed the whole year and came back for one last game at the end of that year just so he wouldn’t have to go out on such a low note.

챨스가 자신의 말년 4년동안 휴스턴에 몸담았던 것에대한 테드 브라운이 올린 트윗은 어느정도 진실이 있다고 생각해. 하지만 아주 부분적으로 말이야. 기억나? 처음 챨스가 이 동네로 넘어올 때 엄청난 기대와 관심을 모았지. 드림 하킴 올라주원을 중심으로 클라이드 드렉슬러, 마리오 엘리와 같은 선수들로 나름의 ‘드림 팀’을 구성했었지. 아주 빵빵한 팀처럼 보였지만, 사실은 그냥 늙은 팀이었어. 팀이 구성된 처음 해에는 서부 지구 결승까지 올라가면서 꾀 기대에 부응하는 듯 해 보였지. 결과적으로 유타의 말론과 스탁턴에게 패했지만. 자신의 선수경력의 내리막으로 향하던 34세, 35세, 36세 때 휴스턴에서의 말년동안 바클리는 그의 몸이 그를 저버리면서 모든 경기에 최선을 다 하지는 않았어. 결국 마지막 해에는- 기억나? 바클리의 대퇴사 두근 힘줄이 끊어지면서 한해를 통째로 다 쉬게 될 뻔 했지만 어떻게든 마지막 게임에는 출전해서 그나마 체면은 살렸지.

But the point is, if you view Charles’ total career, there were times that on defense, he was guilty of displaying ‘fake hustle’ Just on DEFENSE, he wasn’t always committed to playing defense even though he had high steals for a power forward. He was always obviously an all-time great offensive rebounder at only about 6 feet 4 inches, a great scorer inside and outside. But throughout his career, I think Charles was sometimes viewed as more of a ‘me’ player than a ‘we’ player. So if you want to get into ‘fake hustle’ maybe that occasionally applied to Charles. But you can’t do it as a blanket statement saying all four years in Houston was nothing but a ‘fake hustle.’ So there was some truth to it or not that I thought it was funny. But my bottom line is that Tad Brown should have his Twitter account shut down by the owner.

확실한 것은 바클리 휴스턴에서의 경력 전체를 두고 본다면, 수비적인 면에서 그가 말하는 ‘가짜 허슬’을 보였다고 생각해. 수비적인 면에서만! 물론 파워 포워드로써 높은 스틸 수치를 갖고 있지만 그가 수비적인 면에서 최선을 다하지는 않았지. 겨우 6피트 4인치의 키로 역대 최고의 공격리바운더이면서 내/외곽에서 뛰어난 득점원이지만, 커리어 전체를 생각했을 때 ‘팀 플레이어’ 였기 보다는 ‘자기중심’적인 선수로 보여지는 경우도 있다고. 그렇기 때문에 ‘가짜 허슬’에 대해 논할 때 챨스도 해당 되는 경우도 있다는 거지. 물론 ‘가짜 허슬’이라는 말로 챨스 바클리를 통째로 덮어버릴 수 는 없지만, 그 말에 해당되는 경우들도 종종 있었다고 봐. 그래서 테드 브라운이 쓴 트윗이 어느정도는 진실이 있다고 생각하고 웃겼다고 생각하지만 제일 중요한 것은 테드 브라운은 당장 트위터를 꺼야 한다는 거야.

Well I get where you are coming from. I think that people overreact. Charles Barkley is an elite basketball commentator. He’s somebody that’s incredibly hilarious and funny, except for when he’s talking about you because he really really really doesn’t like you. And I kind of get on him about that because everybody knows I’m friends with Charles Barkley, I love him dearly. But you know I love you too. And I don’t like how he talks about you sometimes. He, being Charles Barkley, as honest as he is and as much as he loves me, tells me all the time; ‘I don’t give a damn. We are going to have to agree to disagree on that. I don’t like Skip Bayless.’ And that’s all he says. He would never do anything to you. He just feels the way that he feels. That’s all there is to it.

뭐, 무슨 의도에서 그렇게 이야기 하는지는 알겠어. 사람들이 ‘오바’하는거지. 챨스 바클리는 훌륭한 농구 방송인이야. 아주 재밌고 웃긴 사람이지. 단, 그가 스킵, 너에 대해서 말할 때는 빼고 말이야. 왜냐면 그는 너를 정말, 정말 싫어해. 모든 사람들이 내가 챨스 바클리와 친분이 있고 내가 그를 좋아하는 것을 알아, 그리고 내가 너(스킵)도 좋아하는 걸 알지. 그렇기 때문에 챨스가 너에 대해서 막말하는 것을 내가 뭐라고 하기도 하는데 그건 그냥 챨스 바클리가 챨스 바클리인거야. 내가 챨스를 얼마나 좋게 생각하는지 알지만 솔직하기로 유명한 찰스는 그냥 대놓고 말해. “난 스킵이 싫어 그리고 그거에 대해서 누가 뭐래든 상관없어. 그러니까 이건 그냥 너도 인정하고 넘어가.” 그게 다 야. 말만 그렇게 하고 진짜로 널 어떻게 해코지 할 건 아니니까.

But let me say this about Charles Barkley. When I look at guys, I have no problem with players or organizations who want to speak against the things that Charles Barkley says. I only have one criteria for them. You need to win a championship. If you are a champion and you want to refute vehemently with venom whatever Charles Barkley has to say, I get all of that because you have accomplished something he did not accomplish. If you are not a champion you need to shut the hell up, fall back, and recognize the fact that he has every right to say that things that he says.

하지만 이건 확실히 말하자. 내가 봤을 때, 챔피온쉽 우승을경험한 팀이나 선수가 챨스 바클리에 대해서 뭐라고 하는 거는 난 아무 문제도 없어. 딱 하나의 조건이지. 챔피온 이어야만 해. 네가 만약에 챔피온이면서 챨스 바클리의 말에 어떤 독한 막말을 감정적으로 쏟아내며 반박한다해도 난 다 받아들일 거야. 왜냐면 그들은 챨스가 해내지 못한 것을 해내었기 때문이지. 우승. 하지만 네가 만약에 챔피온이 아닌 경우, 그냥 닥치고 가만히 있어. 가만히 앉아서 챨스 바클리가 하고 싶은 말을 챨스 바클리가 할 권리가 있다는 걸 인정해.

Charles Barkley averaged 22 points and 11.7 rebounds for his career. He averaged it on 54.5% shooting from the field over the course of 16 years. He’s a Hall of Famer. He’s an Olympic gold medalist. And even though he never won an NBA championship, let’s keep in mind not only was Jordan in his way in the East Jordan was also in his way when he went to the Western Conference because when he played against Jordan, in the NBA finals in 1993, that was Jordan who was standing in his way with Pippen. This guys was a walking double-double. In his 16 year career, only time he didn’t average double digit per season in rebounds was his rookie year. Every other time in his career over the course of 15 years, even the last year when his health was debilitated, he averaged a minimum of ten and a half rebounds per game.

So when he sits back as comical as he may be and assaulting as he may come across at times, people who are champions are the only ones that have a right to say something to him about it. Outside of that, they ALL need to shut the hell up because the fact of the matter is the “Round Mound of the Rebound,” who sometimes had questionable conditioning- no doubt about it, still rolled up on a basketball court and was one of the dominant figures at a time when the game wasn’t called as soft as tissue paper. At a time when you had Oakleys of the world, and had Xavier McDaniels of the world and people like that. Whether it was Ewing, David Robinson and others. The league was hardcore as you well know better than me Skip because you were covering the NBA before I cam along. It was rough and rugged. It was very physical. It was a lot of different things, and Charles Barkley was one of the menacing figures in the game of basketball. He put up numbers. He won games. He was consistently competitive out there. He didn’t get punked by anybody other than the time when Charles Oakley tried to step to him even though he wasn’t punked, you know what I’m saying. The point that I’m trying to make is that it was Charles Oakley. So just keep that in mind.

그러니까 바클리가 지금 웃기기만하고 막말만 하는 사람으로만 보여지더라도 챔피온들만 그에게 뭐라고 말할 수 있는거야. 그러지 않은 이상에야 그냥 닥치고 가만히 있어야지. 사실 중요한 건 ‘리바운드계의 둥근 언덕’(동글 동글한 바클리의 몸매와 ‘마운틴(산)’에 비교되는 장신 선수들 사이에 비교적 작은 ‘마운드(언덕)’가 리바운드를 잘 잡아낸다 하여서 붙여진 별명)은 때때로 관리가 잘 안됬을 지언정- 물론 그랬던 적이 있었지, 기어이 코트 위로 굴러들어와서는 지금처럼 마치 티슈 처럼 연약한 시대의 농구와 다른  ‘그’ 시대의 농구를 지배하는 선수들 중 하나였지. 그때는 오클리라던가 제이비어 맥데이얼스라던가 하는 그런 선수들이 있는 시대였어. 유잉, 데이빗 로빈슨 외 여럿이 있었지. 스킵 나보다 먼저 이 경기를 지켜보온 네가 나보다 더 잘 알겠지만 그 시대 때 리그는 완전히 하드코어였지. 강하고 거칠었어. 아주 과격했었지. 지금과는 다른 면이 많아. 그 와중에 가장 위협적인 존재중 하나가 챨스 바클리였어. 득점도 하고, 승리도 했어. 농구 선수로서 지속적으로 경쟁력을 입증해왔어. 그 누구에게도 쫄지 않았지, 단 한번 오클리가 다가왔을 때 빼고. 그걸 ‘쫄았다’고 말할것 까지는 없지만…내 말이 무슨 말인지 알지? 내가 지적하고 싶은거는 이게 다른 누가 아니고 ‘챨스 오클리’였다는 거야. 그걸 감안해 줬으면 좋겠어.

The only thing I’m saying is that I get upset when all of these folks who play in the NBA, coach in the NBA, or executives in the NBA think they have right to come back at Charles Barkley because they are uncomfortable with the TRUTH that he is telling. If you won a championship, then you have achieved something that he hasn’t achieved and you have made sacrifices that he hasn’t made. Isaiah Thomas can talk negatively about him if he so chooses. Michael Jordan can do that if he so chooses. In today’s modern day era, LBJ, Kobe, D-Wade, and people like that can do so. But anybody who has not won a championship- I am going to repeat myself again, ‘SHUT THE HELL UP.’ He is a legitimate Hall of Famer because of what he was able to do on a basketball court. Nine times out of ten, he’s spitting truth, and if you don’t like it do something about it on a basketball court. If you were going against Charles Barkley, back in that day, I’d like to see what kind of player you would have been going up against him. The ELITE took him out, but it took you ELITE to take him out. Let’s respect this man, okay?

내가 하고 싶은 말은, NBA에서 코치를 한다는 사람들, 선수들, 혹은 운영진 중에 하나라던가 하는 사람들이 말이야, 챨스 바클리가 말하는 ‘진실’에 대해서 마음이 상했다고 그에게 이래라 저래라 말할 자격이 있다고 생각하는 것 자체가 난 화가나. 네가 만약에 챔피온이라면 그 말인 즉슨 너는 챨스 바클리가 이뤄내지 못한 것을 이뤄 낸 사람이고 그것을 이루기 위해서 챨스 바클리가 희생하지 않았던 것들을 희생했다는 말이거든. 그렇다면 아이재아 토마스는 그가 만약 원한다면 챨스 바클리에게 욕할 수 있지. 마이클 조던도 원하면 그럴 수 있어. 요즘의 선수들로 친다면 르브론, 코비, 웨이드 같은 사람들은 그럴 자격이 있어. 하지만 챔피온이 아닌 사람들, 내가 다시 한번 말하는데 닥치고 가만히 있어. 챨스 바클리는 농구장 위에서 그가 해낼 수 있던 모든 것들 때문에 정정당당하게 명예의 정당에 헌액되었어. 십중팔구 챨스는 진실을 말해. 그리고 그게 만약에 마음에 들지 않는 다면 그것에 대해 뭐든 해봐. 단 코트 위에서. 거기서 증명해야 할거야. 네가 만약에 그 시대 챨스 바클리와 농구 코트 위에서 맞붙었다면 그를 상대로네가 어떤 류의 선수로 보여졌을지 참 궁금하다. 최고들이 그를 막아냈어. 최고가 아니면 그를 막아낼 수 없다는 거지. 그러니까 이 양반에게 존경심 좀 보였으면 좋겠어.

So you are saying Tad Brown was not responding from the same position of strength because he’s been 12 years with Rockets and they haven’t obviously won a championship for last 12 years. He might say that, if we had him on the show, despite whom Charles ran up against, Charles never did win a ring so he could say that Charles is not speaking as a champion, right?

Well he can say that Charles is not speaking as a champion, but he’s speaking about who is also not a champion. So you ultimately have to put Charles Barkley credentials up against Tad Brown’s. Who’s Tad Brown against Charles Barkley? Who? Who is he? Huh?

물론 바클리도 챔피온으로서 말하는건 마찬가지라고 반박 할 수 있어. 하지만 그건 바클리도 챔피온이 아닌 사람에게 말하고 있다는 거야. 그렇다면 결국에는 챨스 바클리의 경력을 테드 브라운의 경력에 비교해야 된다는 말인데. 바클리와 비교했을 때 브라운이 누구야? 누구? 브라운이 누구야? 모르겠는데?

Just for the record. Now you bring all this up. You mentioned that he is an Olympics Champion. Remember what happened to Charles Barkley in 1984? He got cut by Bobby Knight  off that Olympic team because he didn’t play enough defense for Bobby Knight’s liking.

Fair enough. Fair enough. Skip. We are sitting here raving about the greatness about James Harden. Is he making to anybody’s all-defensive team? I don’t see anybody negating the greatness that he put forth on the court night in and night out. Based off of that, there are plenty of guys that are in the NBA today that weren’t Kobe, that weren’t MJ, that weren’t Tim Duncan, that didn’t do it on both ends of the floor that they are specifically recognized for their greatness as offensive players, and we let that go. So we can’t let it go with Barkley?

Final thought. I got you. Final thought. To Charles’ point, I am not seeing ‘fake hustle’ in the Rockets. I’m not. That means they are sort of just going through the motions and basically quitting. I’m not seeing a team quitting. They didn’t quit last night. They didn’t lay down last night and say ‘please end this quickly.’

Well let’s be clear. My interpretation of what he meant by ‘fake hustle’ is that they are going to come out last night and given all out effort because pride and everything else was going to sift into the equation. They don’t want people bringing out their broomsticks. They don’t want to go into the weekends with everybody looking forward to them getting swept. As a result they are going to put forth an effort that should always be there. Not just when you are on the precipice of…a brink of elimination. That’s what I interpreted his comment is being.

이거 확실하게 정리하고 싶은데. 내가 이해한 챨스 바클리가 말한 ‘가짜 허슬’은 당장 자신들의 자존심이 걸린 문제가 되버리니까 그제서야 최선을 다해서 경기에 임했다는 뜻인거 같아. 로케츠는 사람들이 이번 다가오는 주말에 그들이 스윕 되기를 바라면서 빗자루들을 꺼내길 원치 않을거야. 이제 막 탈락의 벼랑 끝까지 몰리니까 강한 열정과 노력을 이제서야 보인다는 거지. 그것도 위와 같은 이유로 말이야. 내가 봤을 땐 그런 뜻으로 말한 것 같아.

But I want to reiterate my last point. Champions make sacrifices personally and professionally. All of them have taught me that. Hall of Famers who are champions make sacrifices that people can’t imagine. They’ve all taught me that. If they want to attack Charles Barkley, I got nothing to say because they’ve done what he hasn’t done. Outside of that, nobody has a right to say a damn word about what he has to say because for people who are not champions you can’t have more elite resume than him. Karl Malone and people like that are of course up there. Those guys who don’t have championship but were elite in every way. And in Charles Barkley’s case, Box Office. You walked into turn-stop to watch him play. I don’t want to hear that from anybody about him. I don’t want to hear that.

하지만 다시 한번 강조하고 싶은건. 챔피온은 그들만의 희생을 한다는거야. 개인적으로든. 직업적으로든. 여태까지 모든 챔피온들이 가르쳐주었지. 사람들이 상상도 할 수 없는 희생들을 명예의 정당의 챔피온들은 감당해왔지. 만약에 그들 중 누군가가 챨스 바클리를 공격하고 싶다면 말이야 난 아무 할 말이 없어. 왜냐면 그들은 바클리가 이루지 못한 것을 이뤄냈으니까. 하지만 그 외에 그 누구도 챨스 바클리의 말에 하나의 토씨도 달 자격은 없어. 챔피온이 아닌 이상 챨스 바클리의 엘리트 경력을 뛰어넘을 수 없기 때문이지. 물론 칼 말론이나 그런 사람들은 당연히 그 자격이 있어. 비록 우승은 못했지만 모든 면에서 엘리트적인 면모를 보이니까 말이야. 챨스 바클리는 특히 (농구) 흥행수표로 인기도 많았지. 그러니까 나는 챨스에 대해서 이런 말들을 이젠 듣기 싫어. 좀 조용했으면 좋겠어.
